Thursday photo workshop, part 12: food photo styling I

Especially with food, each picture tells a story, which is one of the things I love in food photography. That's why props and perspectives are so important for shooting food.

Besonders bei der Foodfotografie erzählt jedes Foto eine Geschichte, und das ist eines der Dinge, die ich daran besonders mag. Deshalb sind Requisiten und Perspektiven auch beim Fotografieren von Essen besonders wichtig.

While the first picture told a story about red currants, the second picture tells the story about a beautiful bowl. Same setting, same stuff, but a big difference.

Während das erste Foto eine Geschichte über rote Johannisbeeren erzählt, geht es im zweiten Foto lediglich um eine schöne Schale. Dasselbe Setting, dieselben Dinge, aber ein großer Unterschied.

This picture is not about red currants, but about the favourite summer dish of my mother. To tell a story about a mouth-watering dish, you'll need a close-up, and the spoon has to be turned towards you.

Bei diesem Bild hier geht es nicht um Johannisbeeren, sondern um das Lieblings-Sommeressen meiner Mutter. Um eine Geschichte zu erzählen, die den Mund wässerig macht, braucht man eine Nahaufnahme, und der Löffel sollte in Richtung des Betrachters gerichtet sein.

Another story you can tell is not about what to eat but where, showing a bit of the ambience. The bowl is rather small in this picture, and the berries even smaller, but due to the colour palette, the berries still are the main topic of the picture. For that, I kept the background, table and fabric in different shades of white. The blue bowl provides the darkest shades of the photo, and the bright red berries still are the the part of the picture that automatically attracts your eyes most.

Eine andere Geschichte, die man erzählen kann ist nicht die, was man isst sondern wo, indem man ein bißchen was vom Ambiente zeigt. Das Schälchen ist in diesem Foto ziemlich klein, und die Beeren sogar noch kleiner, aber aufgrund der Farbpalette, die ich gewählt habe, sind sie immer noch das Hauptthema des Bildes. Hintergrund, Tisch und Stoff sind in verschiedenen Weiß-Tönen gehalten. Die blauweiße Schale hat die dunkelsten Töne im Bild und zieht den Blick auf sich. Trotzdem sind die leuchtend roten Beeren immer noch der Teil des Bildes, der automatisch am meisten ins Auge fällt.

Most of the times, I try to combine all elements: A bit of food, props and ambience. (A smaller spoon would have been prettier, but I was in a hurry ...)

Meist versuche ich, alle Elemente zu kombinieren: Essen, Requisite und Umgebung. (Ein kleinerer Löffel wäre schöner gewesen, aber ich hatte es eilig ...)
