Thursday photo workshop, part 5: overexposure

Sometimes you might not have the possibility to work with reflectors or additional light sources, f. e. outdoors. But there's an easy possibility to add more light to your picture via overexposure. Basically, you're telling your camera just to add some more exposure time, which is: more light = brighter picture. In the pictures below, I didn't change the light, I just choose different exposure times.
_____

The left picture is too bright, you can't tell where the paper is and where the wall. The right one is too dark, so choose one in between. Especially in pictures with very bright and rather dark areas, you might need some post production anyway. Generally, it's easier to work with a picture that is too bright: the bright areas contain more information than the dark ones.
____

With your compact camera, you'll have to choose manual mode; for overexposure, with my Canon Ixus, it's the button above the SET button. You can see in the display how bright (right side) or dark (left side) the picture is going to be.
_____

With your DSLR, at least with my Canon EOS, there are two options. Option No 1 is using the creative mode and using 'brighter' instead of the standard mode. You can choose between 3 different adjustments for this effect, from light (see picture above) to strong, which means you can choose between three different options of brightness.
_____

Option No 2 is to choose one of the manual modes (AV, TV ...), here you'll have much more than 3 different overexposure options. Especially in grey and rainy times like now, this can make a huge difference for your pictures!
I'll try to make a DIY for an additional (artificial) light source for the Thursday photo workshop next week, if life won't be too busy.
_____

Katrin, you are so gracious with your sharing! Thank you, Thank you! I'm lusting over that vintage typewriter!

The typewriter was my Christmas gift for my son, and you can still write with it! He was very happy, and so was I.

Klasse Tutorial!
