Menschenmuster, heute (wieder) Thema bei Michaela. Vielleicht sind es eher Mustermenschen als Menschenmuster geworden? Aber ich mochte die Mischung aus alten Gemälde-Postkarten vom Flohmarkt mit verschiedenen Ebenen digitaler Rasterung.

Mustermittwoch am Donnerstag - pattern Wednesday on Tursday
Gestern war "Earth Day" - Tag der Erde - dafür war eigentlich dieses Mittwochsmuster gedacht. Michaela hatte grüne organische Formen als Thema vorgeschlagen, und das hat mich an die 'Gaia Hypothese' erinnert, die James Lovelock und Lynn Margulis in den Siebzigern entwickelt haben. Sie haben die Erde - Gaia - als ein einziges, lebendiges, riesiges Lebewesen beschrieben, den wir und alles andere Leben auf unserem Planeten durch unser Verhalten und unsere Handlungen gestalten und zugleich Teil davon sind. Zur selben Zeit schickten Russland und die USA die ersten Menschen in den Weltraum. Lynn Margulis verglich diesen Aufbruch in den Kosmos mit Samenkapseln, mit denen die Menschheit sich ausbreitet ... Einen schönen verspäteten Earth Day!

Yesterday was "Earth Day" - that's what this Wednesday pattern initially was meant for. Michaela had suggested green organic forms as patterns, which reminded me of James Lovelock's and Lynn Margulis' "Gaia hypothesis". They described our earth - Gaia - as one single, living, gigantic organism, and we and every life form on our planet are part of it and creating it. Simultaneously, the US and Russia sent the first men into space. Lynn Margulis compared this departure into the cosmos with spreading human kind like seed capsules ... Happy belated Earth Day!

Michaelas Musttermittwoch ist immer wieder eine Herausforderung, Neues zu probieren. Für diese Woche hatte sie organische Muster und die Farbe Gelb vorgeschlagen, eine Farbe, die ich sonst nie verwendet hätte.

I wanted to do this for a long time - turning my favourite travel pictures into illustrations. It's funny to see how things work for a photo, but not for an illustration. This was one of my favourite places/ travels/ evenings last year - Pellestrine/ Italy.

Collage scrap exchange, second round
This is my next round for the collage scrap exchange. And again it was great - and a challenge - to use limited ressources and scraps I wouldn't have chosen. The butterflies f. e. were from my partner in crime/ collage, Allison, as well as the heads and the typo, which originally were cheese names. We'll have another 3 weeks until we'll have to send in our collages. I'm curious about what Allison is going to create ...

Und wieder war es großartig - und eine Herausforderung - mit limitierten Materialien und Papieren zu abeiten, die ich mir sebst nicht ausgesucht hätte. Die Schmetterlinge waren z. illustration friday: lonely
'lonely' is this week's topic at illustration friday. While renovating my workspace, I found a lot of long forgotten things, including a complete (but never published) children's book about a lonely anteater. He's lonely because he considers himself to be a bear, and of course he's doing everything wrong. He can't fish (shown in the picture), he despites honey and feels a strange affection to eating ants; in the end, he meets a nice female anteater and suddenly he understand about what he is.
Those were the first digital illustrations I ever made. I could do it much better today, but still I love the combination of the hand-drawn anteater and the vintage copperplate landscape ...

Beim Renovieren meines Arbeitsplatzes habe ich eine Menge längst vergessener Dinge gefunden, einschließllich eines kompletten (aber leider niemals veröffentlichten) Kinderbuchs über einen einsamen Ameisenbären. Er ist einsam, weil er sich für einen Bären hält, und natürlich macht er alles falsch. Er kann nicht fischen (was das Bild zeigt), verabscheut Honig und hat eine seltsame Neigung dazu, Ameisen zu essen; schließlich trifft er eine nette Ameisenbärin und versteht plötzlich, wer bzw. was er ist ...
Das waren die ersten digitalen Illustrationen, die ich jemals gemacht habe. Ich könnte es heute deutlich besser machen, aber ich mag die Kombination aus dem handgezeichneten Ameisenbären und den alten Kupferstich-Landschaften ...

I'm not at my workplace, so participating on illustration friday meant to do it on the fly. Here's a cartoon I draw about 15 years ago. For a year, I draw mouse cartoons while my son made is homework. So, both of us worked side by side until he decided to do his homework all by himself. He was seven, and this was the end of the mouse cartoon series. Here's the one that fits perfectly to this week's illustration friday topic 'carry'.

Ich bin nicht an meinem Arbeitsplatz, also musste ich ein bißchen improvisieren, um am heutigen illustration friday mitzumachen. Hier ist ein Cartoon, den ich vor etwa 15 Jahren gezeichnet habe. Ein Jahr lang habe ich Mäusecartoons gezeichnet, während mein Sohn Hausaufgaben gemacht hat. Wir haben so beide Seite an Seite gearbeitet, bis er sich entschieden hat, dass er in Zukunft seine Hausaufgaben ganz allein machen würde. Er war sieben, und das war das Ende der Serie der Mäusecartoons. Hier ist der, der perfekt zum Thema dieser Woche bei illustration friday passt: 'carry' (tragen, transportieren).

And I get a lot of inspiration from looking at the work of the other participants. So, this is my illustration for this week's topic 'lost'. I found this guy this week at Joseph Cornell's for free download and was looking forward to an opportunity to use it. For the other elements I used parts of my own artwork.

This weeks illustration friday's topic is 'suspend'. I had a very busy, creative week: creating a new blog layout and opening my etsy shop, and always behind my timeline. So, for me creativity and suspending is very close and always both: flying high and the fear of falling. This is what I tried to illustrate.
I used elements of the new layout (the pen and the giveaway-banner), and again you can download one of the textures I used: the background sky . Have fun with it.

Ich hatte eine sehr anstrengende, aber kreative Woche: das neue Bloglayout und die Eröffnung meines etsy-Shops - und ich war immer im Zeitplan zurück (und bin es noch). Und so ist Kreativität für mich eng mit 'suspending' verbunden und beides: Sie lässt mich hoch fliegen, aber die Angst vor dem Fallen ist oft nah; und das ist es, was ich illustrieren wollte.

illustration friday: space
Penelope Dullagan always seems to pick topics for her illustration fridays that somehow reflect things that are already in my mind. This week, I had found a wonderful article about 'negative space' on the amazing photoblog lightstalking.com. It's about how space shapes form. Today, Penelope came up with the topic 'space'. So I combined vintage astronomic details, a map of the stars and a NASA photo for the background (illustrating the distant aspect of space, outerspace) and used the negative space to create a form around the illustration of a tiny house on our tiny planet. "A Room of One's Own", like Virginia Woolf put it, respectively space for me and my needs is the other side, the 'inner space'.

illustration friday: secret
Last week, my illustration friday became sunday. Today, I spent my day writing search engine texts and, as this work became more demanding each minute, I used my breaks for this illustration.
Penelope Dullaghan's illustration friday topic for this week was 'secret'. What could provide more secrets than the future? That's why I choose lot of mystic elements and a kind of underwater ambience to illustrate this wonderful topic.This week I found the many possibilities to import Flash generated graphics into Photoshop and found a whole new world for me. The yellow pentagram f. e. is an element I used for a logo a long, long time ago. I love to have it included here, too ... The beautiful hand, bird and rose are from one of my favourite sources for free vintage pictures, graphicsfairy.

Letzte Woche wurde aus dem 'illustration friday' letztendlich Sonntag. Heute habe ich den Tag mit dem Schreiben von Suchmaschinentexten verbracht, aber als das gegen Nachmittag wirklich anstrengend wurde, habe ich alle Pausen damit verbracht, an dieser Illustration zu arbeiten (die ist fertig, die Texte nicht ... ...)
Das Thema von Penelope Dullaghan's illustration friday war diese Woche 'Geheimnis'. Was könnte geheimnisvoller sein als die Zukunft? Deshalb habe ich eine Reihe mystischer Elemente in eine Art Unter- und Überwasserambiente für die Illustration dieses Themas gewählt. Diese Woche habe ich auch herausgefunden, wie wunderbar ich alte, in Flash gestaltete Elemente in Photoshop einbinden kann, das eröffnet mir eine ganz neue Welt! Das gelbe Pentagramm z. B. ist ein Element, das ich vor langer Zeit in einem Logo verwendet habe, und hier ist es wieder ... Die wunderschöne Hand, der Vogel und die Rose stammen von einer meiner liebsten Quellen für frei verwendbare Vintagebilder, graphicsfairy.

OK, the project is called illustrationfriday, but I was too busy to finish the illustration earlier. Bellas Topic for this week was 'shiny', so I did my best with the shiny background. It's not easy to see in this small version, but the crown has got thorns on it's bottom, so it's only shiny on first sight.

Das Projekt heisst natürlich illustrationfriday, aber es ist Sonntag geworden bevor ich die Illustration beendet habe - es war eine extrem volle Woche. Bellas Thema für diese Woche war 'shiny', also schimmernd oder glänzend, funkelnd. Ich habe mich bemüht, den Hintergrund shiny hinzubekommen. Man sieht es in diesem kleinen Format nicht leicht, aber die Krone hat unten Dornen, es ist also nur auf den ersten Blick alles glänzend.

Faded - this is the week's topic of 'illustration friday' (Penelope offers each week a new topic for an illustration). I was reminded of a Bob Dylan song, where he says: The love that faded left me only tears. According to the topic, I choose a faded paper as a background, vintage pictures (including the tattoo) and some new, coloured elements. The vintage pictures you'll find at graphicsfairy (one of my favourite resources!).
Faded (verblichen) ist das Thema der Woche auf 'illustration friday'(Prnelope schlägt jede Woche ein Thema für eine Illustration vor). Es erinnerte mich an einen Bob Dylan-Song, in dem er sagte (was auf englisch natürlich erheblich besser und mehr nach Bob Dylan klingt): Die verblasste Liebe hinterließ mir nur Tränen.
